NC Legislature Extends Tax Filing Deadline for Farmers and Fishermen

Raleigh, NC – State lawmakers voted unanimously to extend the tax filing deadline for farmers and fishermen to April 15th. Currently, farmers and fishermen who choose to not pay estimated income tax quarterly, must have their total taxes paid by March 1st.

However, the N.C. Department of Revenue has had to delay processing returns due to updating software to reflect changes in the tax code from the state budget. The department expects to begin processing returns on February 28th, which is a day before the deadline for farmers and fishermen to have taxes filed.

With the passing of House Bill 797, farmers and fishermen will have now have until April 15th to file and pay their full taxes for the 2021 year to avoid a penalty.

“With the N.C. Department of Revenue’s processing software being updated and the date for them to begin the expected date for the start of processing returns being February 28th, it is only right to offer extra time for these citizens to file.” said Rep. Keith Kidwell (R-Beaufort, Craven). “I am proud to have supported this bill that will help hardworking North Carolinians make sure they have enough time to get their taxes done with no penalty.”
