Lawmakers Mourn Loss of Rep. Jerry Carter

Members of the North Carolina House took to social media to mourn the loss of their friend and colleague Rep. Jerry Carter (R-Rockingham) who passed away suddenly early Tuesday morning.

Speaker Tim Moore: "I am heartbroken and devastated by the sudden loss of my friend and colleague Representative Jerry Carter. Representative Carter was an extraordinary legislator and a devoted husband to his wife, who he loved dearly. He was the chaplain of the NC State Highway Patrol and was a man of deep faith and faithful prayer. He was the founder and pastor of Reidsville Baptist Church, and he was deeply passionate about serving Rockingham County and his constituents back home. We will feel Jerry’s loss deeply at the NC General Assembly, and my prayers are with Jerry’s family as they grieve this great loss in the days ahead."

Majority Leader John Bell: “Heartbroken over the passing of our friend and colleague Representative Jerry Carter of Rockingham County. He was a kind, compassionate and devoted man who deeply loved God, his family and community. He proudly served by example, both as a pastor and legislator, with great enthusiasm, honor and passion. He will be sincerely missed by all who knew him. Our heartfelt prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Rep. Erin Paré: “Jerry Carter was the best of all of us. When I joined the N.C. House this winter, Jerry was so kind to me - he made me smile just being around him, and his sense of humor made me laugh often. He had an at-peace, joyful spirit about him all the time; he was genuine and someone I felt I could call my friend immediately upon meeting him. I looked forward to seeing him each day. He was a loyal follower of the Lord and a servant to the people of N.C. He unexpectedly passed away this morning during a medical procedure. I am a better person for having known him, even for a relatively short time. Rest In Peace in the arms of Christ, Jerry. I look forward to seeing you again one day. Prayers for peace for your family.”

Rep. Dudley Greene: “Saddened to hear of Rep. Jerry Carter’s passing. Jerry was one of those who extended a hand of friendship to this new kid on the block and was always ready to provide an encouraging word. I am confident the empty seat at the General Assembly this week is Heaven’s gain but I will miss my friend. Godspeed and rest well Jerry…enter thou into the joy of the Lord!”

Rep. Jeff McNeely: “I’ve waited until now to tell about the loss of my friend and fellow Representative, Jerry Carter. This has been an extremely difficult time for me. He passed away early Monday morning. Jerry was a Preacher in his town of Reidsville and he truly was a Man of God. I would constantly tell him he was the Ark of the Covenant and that I knew when he was by my side I couldn’t lose when we went to battle on the floor of the House. His body may not be present, but his spirit will be with me forever. Godspeed Rep. Carter.”

Rep. Charlie Miller:This morning I received the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our very own, Rep. Jerry Carter. As a freshman member I looked up to Rep. Carter, who continuously offered his wisdom, guidance, and prayer. He was a strong man of faith and served as an example to all of what it looks like to be a disciple of the Lord. You truly saw the love of God shining through, in everything that Rep. Carter did. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. I ask that you all keep his family in your prayers during this difficult time as they grieve this tremendous loss.”

Rep. John Torbett: “Missing Rep Carter today. I always called Jerry “cuz” because my mom was a Carter. Jerry was a good man full of joy and believed deeply in his Lord and Savior. I’m glad I had the opportunity to know him. You served your folks with honor, Jerry. Godspeed, my friend.”

Rep. Phil Shepard: “This is heartbreaking to those who knew him! Thank God I had an opportunity to know him, This man of Faith.”

Rep. David Willis: "When we got the news yesterday that Jerry Carter had passed it took me a while to process. I had only gotten to know Jerry earlier this year, but as most folks will testify, he never met a stranger. He always had a kind word or a smile. He greeted us newbies with support and encouragement. Please pray for his wife, his family, his church family. He truly was a good man gone too soon. I take comfort in knowing that Jerry was welcomed into his heavenly home with the words, "Well done my true and faithful servant."

Rep. Jon Hardister: “I am deeply saddened to hear about the loss of my friend and colleague Rep. Jerry Carter. He was a true public servant who cared about the State of North Carolina. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Rep. John Bradford: “My love and prayers go out to Rep Jerry Carter and his family. Rep Carter passed away early this morning. I enjoyed talking to him about how he started his church, helped lead their exponential growth and his calling to become a NC legislator. He will be deeply missed by many. Rest In Peace, Jerry.”

Rep. Chris Humphrey: “Jerry Carter was a man of strong conviction who represented Rockingham County honorably. He was a true family man who loved his wife, children, and was especially proud of his grandchildren. In addition to his service to NC at the Legislature, he served his community and church family faithfully as Pastor of Reidsville Baptist Church. We will sorely miss his warm presence and wisdom at the General Assembly. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the loss of a great man.”

Rep. Howard Penny: “Jerry Carter's seat is in front of my desk in the NC House. We spent a lot of time talking between votes and with regular visits to his office in the LOB. He was a devout Man of God who loved his Lord, his family and his church and those he Represented in the NC House! Our lives are better for knowing him and serving with him. Enter in to thy reward my brother.”

Rep. Kristin Baker, MD: “Deeply saddened to learn of my friend and colleague Rep. Jerry Carter’s passing yesterday. Rep Carter’s seat was directly in front of mine on the House floor and I always appreciated his genuine kindness and concern for others. Representing Rockingham County in his second term, Rep. Carter was a man of profound faith, having founded and served as senior pastor of Reidsville Baptist Church and also serving the last 12 years as chaplain for the NC Highway Patrol. Please join me in prayer for his family during this difficult time.”
